Tempest Saint in association with LMC Presents: Call of Fenrir @ the Fiddlers Elbow, Camden 06/09/25 Tempest Saint, Velvet Grip, No Writer

For anyone that’s come across the Pete &
Vinnie Play podcast are in for a treat as they make their live debut under
the moniker No Writer at Camden’s famous historical haunt the Fiddlers
Elbow. They pick, shred, duel and generally noodle over a headbanging backing
track with tight precision. As openers go and given their talents, they’re ego free,
down to earth and well received by all.
Velvet Grip are described as 80’s Rock with 70’s influences
which sounds confusing until you hear them. They have that old swagger about
them with punchy vocals, rumbling bass, ass-kicking drum fills and shredding
guitar solos. They draw a decent enough crowd who demand ‘one more song’ which is
delivered with a rendition of Guns n’ Roses Mr Brownstone.
Tonight’s hosts Tempest Saint are a reminder that
while it maybe 2025, the NWOBHM era never really left us. Belting out
Traditional Heavy Metal reminiscent of Saxon, Iron Maiden and Manowar from
their Hyperbolised debut which came out back in May. They shred through tracks
Dead Ringer, the Cursed and Beggars Belief amongst others like they’re old
pro’s never missing a beat with frontman Joe’s shrieking pipes and Lukes punchy
bass lines providing the canvas for guitarist James’ precision riffing and
shredding solos. Along with newcomer Lee on drums who joined earlier in the
year, he brings an energy that’s helping them forge a gritty studded path of
their own.
Most of whom were in attendance seen to have left by the
time Call of Fenrir begin to set up fresh frok their recent Coalition
Fest performance, leaving a smaller more intimate audience. This doesn’t dampen
the spirits of these war painted Viking Metalers as they play through a set of
newer material like Winds Pr evail against some songs that are becoming firm set
favourites and epic sagas such as A Wolf’s Requiem, led by Olivia on guitar and
vocals and newer release Allfather. Chris’ vocals shred and growl as he gives a
brutal performance whilst drummer Joe tightly holds his crew together over the
roughness of a pretty empty room. An attempt to divide the room into Vikings and
Saxons leads to a three-man wall of death. Going by how these songs are landing
and with an album due out [hopefully] soon, they’ll soon be playing to bigger
audiences and those who witnessed tonight’s raid will be able to say ‘I was
there when no one else was,’ although should be noted they have played to and
won over bigger audiences than this. But tonight will forever echo around the
great halls of Valhalla.
